Veratraldehyde, also known as 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, is an important organic chemical raw material and fragrance intermediate. Its molecular form is C9H10O3, with an appearance of white to light yellow powder or crystals. The aroma is similar to that of vanillin but more woody.
Veratraldehyde melts between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius. It is almost insoluble in water at room temperature, but soluble in oils, hot water and ethanol. Oils such as Javanese Lemongrass and Houttuynia Cordata contain natural products. Veratraldehide can be found naturally in certain plants, such as Veratrum. 2. Veratraldehyde is an organic synthetic intermediate. The pharmaceutical industry uses it to synthesize the drug methyldopa and also to produce the veterinary drug sulfonamide synergist Diclofenac. This veterinary drug is added to feed at a rate of 0.02% by weight to enhance the effectiveness of the iodine amine added to the feed, and is used to prevent and treat bacterial infections in household food.
