Turpentine is a kind of essential oil, and it is the most produced essential oil at present. It is an aromatic volatile oil obtained by distillation or extraction from the oleoresin exuded from the wood of Pinus massoniana Lamb, Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. or its genus. It has a special fragrance. It is composed of a mixture of hydrocarbons, which contains a large amount of terpene compounds. According to the source of raw materials, it is divided into four types: gum turpentine, wood turpentine, sulfate turpentine and dry distillation turpentine.
Turpentine is widely used as a chemical raw material. It can be found in industries such as art glass, paint, camphor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and rosin production.
Turpentine is an excellent solvent with a strong ability to dissolve organic matter. It is traditionally used in paints, drying agents, ointments, shoe polish, adhesives, and medicines. Many new products have been developed in the fields of synthetic chemicals and fragrances by using the main components of turpentine and reprocessing them.
Due to the diversity of various monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes and their isomers in turpentine, it can be synthesized into a variety of products and has a wide range of uses. There are still many new products to be developed and utilized.

Turpentine is one of the most important plant essential oils in the world. It is a transparent, slightly yellow, aromatic liquid extracted from the leaves of pine needle plants by steam distillation. α-pinene and β-pinene separated from turpentine are important raw materials for industrial synthesis.
α-pinene not only has many functions in industry, but also has important pharmacological effects in the field of medicine. Zhu Fuhong and others from the Department of Immunology, Basic College of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University have conducted relevant research on α-pinene. The article was published in the journal “Pharmaceutical Chemistry” published by Hans Publishing House.
Turpentine is an important renewable energy source in my country. It has a unique structure and a wide range of biological properties. At present, people mainly use turpentine as a raw material to prepare α-pinene by distillation and separation. α-pinene is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature, volatile, insoluble in water, contains a special bicyclic double bond structure, has good biological activity and unique reaction diversity. In the fields of chemical industry and atmospheric chemistry, it is one of the important raw materials for synthesizing chemical products such as camphor, borneol, pinene, fragrances, resins, etc.
In recent years, the medical field has also begun to pay attention to α-pinene. Studies have found that the pharmacological effects of α-pinene are mainly anti-tumor, anti-fungal, anti-allergic and ulcer improvement.
In the study of the effect of α-pinene on non-small cell lung cancer, Zhang Z et al. treated A549 cells with α-pinene and paclitaxel, and the combination of drugs can increase the efficacy of paclitaxel in inhibiting tumors.
The results showed that α-pinene can significantly promote tumor cell apoptosis. This is mainly due to the synergistic effect when used in combination with paclitaxel. Further research on the mechanism showed that when α-pinene is used in combination with paclitaxel, the proportion of G0/G1 phase cells can be significantly increased, and there are changes in cell morphological characteristics, such as chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation, etc., to lead to the occurrence of tumor cell apoptosis.
The main components of the cell wall of Candida albicans are chitin, glucose and mannan, the chemical composition of the cell membrane is mainly ergosterol, the nucleic acid is mainly DNA, and a small amount of RNA. The synthesis of these components can lead to the death of bacterial cells.
Xia Zhongdi et al. found that α-pinene has a significant inhibitory effect on the synthesis of chitin and polysaccharide components in the cell wall of Candida albicans, the synthesis of ergosterol in the cell membrane, and the synthesis of nucleic acids DNA and RNA, among which the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis is more obvious. Pichette A et al. also found that α-pinene has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant effects.
In the study of Nam SY et al. on the inhibitory effect of α-pinene on allergic rhinitis in mice, it was found that the expression of IL-4 in spleen lymphocytes was reduced, and the IgE, α-TNF, ICAM-1 and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 in the nasal mucosa were reduced. The increased eosinophils and mast cells in mice were also significantly reduced after α-pinene treatment. In addition, in the study of α-pinene acting on the human mast cell line HMC-1, α-pinene can inhibit the activity of phosphorylated RIP2, IKK-β, NF-κB and caspase-1 after sensitization. Therefore, α-pinene is considered to be an anti-allergic agent.
In the study of improving ulcers, Pinheiro Mde A et al. used α-pinene extracted from oil to treat gastric ulcers in mice, and found that α-pinene had significant anti-ulcer activity.
In addition to the above pharmacological effects, α-pinene also has anti-anxiety drug activity, antioxidant effects, and insect repellent effects.
Turpentine is an essential oil obtained by processing and extracting rosin secreted by plants of the genus Pinaceae. It is an essential oil with huge production and low price in the world today. As one of the main components of turpentine, α-pinene is not only widely used in the chemical industry, but also has good pharmacological effects in the medical field. It is hoped that the research on α-pinene in the fields of medicine and chemical industry can be further deepened, which will provide a good prospect for the development and application of α-pinene in the future.
Thinners are used to dilute paint and clean brushes after painting. These thinners can be used for almost all types of oil paintings. The only exception is water-soluble oil thinners, which are only suitable for water-soluble oil paintings.
Turpentine is a traditional thinner with a typical smell, which can ensure the oiliness of the paint when painting. White essential oil and odorless thinners are petroleum derivatives. They are only used to clean brushes after painting. They are now considered unsuitable for artist-quality products.
Distilled turpentine is a relatively pure turpentine obtained by heating and distilling turpentine. It has the strongest solubility among various solvents and is the only solvent that can easily dissolve dammar resin. Distilled turpentine is a viscous mixture that evaporates slowly and has a special smell. It is more suitable for wet painting than white essential oil. It will thicken if exposed to air or sunlight for a long time.
White essential oil can evaporate after mixing with paint like water. Odorless thinners are similar to turpentine, but have less odor and are the least toxic. All diluents should be used with ventilation.
Mineral spirits: Mineral spirits are a byproduct of petroleum and function as a diluent for oil painting in the same way as turpentine. It is as pure as water and evaporates most fully, but has slightly less solubility.
Avoid over-diluting: Oil paints can be diluted with linseed oil. However, if too much linseed oil is used, the pigments in the oil paint will not be fully condensed. The painting surface may appear lackluster or uneven and easily damaged. To avoid over-diluting, painters can choose to use a medium for oil painting instead of a diluent.
White essential oil can evaporate after mixing with the paint like water. Odorless diluents are similar to turpentine, but have less odor and are the least toxic. All diluents should be used with ventilation.
