Chemical property
Lanolin is an oil secreted by the sheep that sticks to the wool. Anhydrous and hydrated lanolin are the two types of refined products. Anhydrous Lanolin is a yellowish or brownish yellow substance that looks like ointment. It’s sticky and smooth.
It is soluble with chloroform, ether or hot ethanol. Insoluble with water. But, it mixes evenly and well when mixed with twice as much water. Lanolin cannot be saponified by caustic acid, but it can be saponified under pressure and heat in an ethanol solution containing caustic acid. Strong hygroscopicity. Mp36-42, acid value less than 1.5, saponification of 92-106, (heated for 2 hours and then refluxed), iodine of 18-35, (left in darkness for 4 hours).
Melting lanolin, and then mixing it with distilled or filtered water will produce lanolin-containing water. The ointment is light yellow to off-white in color with a 25%-35% water content. Dissolves in ether, chloroform and water.
